International Overdose Awareness Day

On August 31, we recognize International Overdose Awareness Day, a worldwide event to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths. SMG providers understand the dangers associated with the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs and are actively engaged in reducing unnecessary opioid prescribing and identifying alternative therapies. Our Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASC) have become leaders in this initiative, minimizing the use of opioids peri-operatively by utilizing local anesthesia when possible and specializing in use of nonopioid preoperative medications as well as specific ultrasound-guided regional nerve blocks. These alternative options have proven positive for patients, resulting in faster emergence and fewer side effects.

Are You Allergic to Penicillin?

Did you know that 10 percent of patients describe themselves as “penicillin allergic,” yet only about one percent of them are truly allergic? A misdiagnosed or unverified penicillin allergy can negatively affect your medical care. If you are age 65 or older and are uncertain of your allergy to penicillin, our Immunology team can help eliminate those concerns with one simple test. If you are interested in accurately determining your sensitivity to penicillin, we encourage you to visit one of our allergists.
